The Book Publishing Industry, Just Like All The Others!

No industry today can boast of a hundred percent growth rate in the last decade, except for the IT industry. This is because of the excessive dependence that all other industries have on this one industry. It is strange, but a fact that no industry can develop today on its own, without depending upon the of the IT industry. The book publishing industry is no exception to this rule. Many years ago, there might have been a possibility of publishing a book or a magazine, without too much dependence on a computer. Today the entire scenario has changed. From printing to publishing, the whole process is computerized, leaving little or no room for error of any kind.

The book publishing industry has taken a lot of beating after the arrival of the virtual world. You now hear of e-books and e-zines, things that did not even figure in a dictionary till very recently. However, there is no point in any publishing house, hanging on to its archaic ways without wanting to keep up with the changes in the industry. If there is a great deal of dependence on software in the field of publishing, there is nothing one can do. Whether it is printing or compiling or even the final design layout, all processes are made possible because of advanced software and other IT solutions.

Just like all other fields, the book publishing industry is as difficult to survive in. if you do not have a cool head on your shoulders, you are most likely to get mowed down without any warning whatsoever. Over the years the publishing industry has become one the most competitive industries in the world. People keep going out of their way to ensure that authors stay with them. They do this as soon as they realize that the authors are like the goose that lays golden eggs.

If you want to get into the book publishing industry and make a mark for yourself, it would be a good idea to job shadow somebody who is already well established. Please also remember, that this might not be always possible. Not many people are prepared to share their expertise with a newcomer, especially if they are not very sure, whether the person is really serious or not about the whole profession. A reasonably good way of entering the industry would be to first be an extern and then an intern. You will be able to pick up the key elements of the trade and how things really work when you are an extern. Also, it will help you decide whether or not this particular industry is where you could perform at your best.

Once you have decided as an extern in the book publishing industry that book publishing is what you want to do, you can register for an internship with a good publishing house and become a true professional.
